New Requirements for 2025 Travel

As of 2025, all US citizens must have an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) to travel to certain destinations, including the United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland) and Israel. Additional countries plan to implement this in the coming year to enhance border security and streamline the entry process for visitors.

The United Kingdom

By 2025, US, Canadian, and Australian citizens will need to obtain the ETA before arrival in the UK. You do not need an ETA to transit through the UK if you will not pass through border control (‘airside’ transit). If you’re not sure if you’ll pass through UK border control during transit, ask your airline.

If you already hold a UK visa or are a British, Irish, or BOT (British Overseas Territory) citizen, you do not need an ETA.

The UK ETA system applies to short stays (up to 6 months) for tourism, business, or transit purposes. Once you are approved, your UK ETA will be valid for 2 years, allowing you to travel there as many times as you want during that time. If you already have a valid ETA but get a new passport, you will need to apply for a new one.

How to Apply for the UK ETA

Applying for a UK ETA is a straightforward online process. You’ll complete an application form on the UK government’s official ETA portal. The easiest way to do this is through their app:
Download the UK ETA app on Google Play
Download the UK ETA app on the App Store

Information such as your passport details, a photo of yourself, your travel plans, and some security-related questions will be required. A small processing fee of £10 will be applicable.

Most applications will be processed within 48-72 hours, so plan accordingly. You’ll receive a confirmation electronically, which will be linked to your passport.

Israel

As of 2025, travelers to Israel will need to obtain an ETA-IL. This applies to citizens of 99 countries, including the United States. This will be valid for up to two years (or until your current passport expires) and allows you to spend up to 90 days in Israel per visit. You do not need an ETA-IL for a stopover at an Israeli airport if you are not passing through border control.

If you have a valid Israel visa or Israeli citizenship, you will not need to obtain an ETA-IL.

For more information, please visit their official website.

How to Apply for the ETA-IL

You can complete the ETA-IL application online and get a response within 72 hours. The form asks for your email address, travel details, personal information, a valid passport, and a non-refundable payment of 25 NIS (less than USD$7).

Other Countries Introducing ETA Requirements

More countries are planning to implement electronic travel authorization in 2025. Here are a few to watch out for:

Thailand: Thai authorities are currently working on the specifics to roll out an ETA requirement in 2025. Until more information is released, you may continue to travel there without an ETA.

European Union: The EU is expected to announce a launch date for its new EES (Entry/Exit System) and ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) requirements in 2025.

South Africa: South Africa is preparing to launch an ETA system in 2025.

Final Tips

-Always check your passport’s validity before applying.
-Apply for the ETA well in advance of your travel dates.
